6th Grade Math

Syllabus

Course Description: Throughout this school year we will continue to build on to the math topics learned in previous years and extend our thinking algebraically. We will focus on five critical areas: (1) Connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and to solve; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion to the system of rational numbers, including negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; (4) developing understanding of statistical problem solving; and (5) solving problems involving area, surface area, and volume. The 8 Math Practice Standards will also be incorporated into everyday lessons.

Required Materials: All required supplies required for math is accounted for in Colonial Hill’s overall list. A CPM textbook and workbook are provided to each student. Finally, a calculator for home use will also be needed. This can be accessed through a computer, tablet, phone, or a handheld calculator.

Grading: Grading will be weighted in accordance with district standards.  Tests will make up 60% of each child's grade. 20% will be made up of partner tests. The remaining 20% will be split evenly between homework and classroom participation. Grades can be accessed by parents and students at www.worthington-portal.org/LoginPolicy.jsp.

Homework:  Homework is an extremely important part of any math class.  Homework is meant to reinforce and review topics covered in class.  Students will be expected to complete 15 to 30 minutes of homework each night.   Students will need to place their name, class block, and the date in the upper right hand corner of each assignment.  All work must be shown on each problem. If the work is not shown, the student will not receive credit for that night's homework. Late work may be turned in until the unit is over. Once the next chapter begins, homework cannot be turned in for credit.  The important part of homework is that each student puts in effort and demonstrates this on each problem. Homework will be graded upon effort and completion.

Test Corrections: Students are able to do corrections on tests. All work must be shown on the provided worksheet and must be signed by a parent or guardian. Students are able to earn up to half of the points back from the quiz. Corrections must be stapled to the test, signed by a parent or guardian, and show all work. Corrections will not be accepted if they do not meet these criteria.

Absent Policy: Students will have an equal amount of days to complete work they missed on days they are absent without any late penalty.  Students are responsible for checking and picking up any missing work out of the "Absent Bin" in the classroom.

Resources: Students are able to access several different resources in order to help them succeed when they are not in the classroom or may be unable to come to study hall. All homework will be posted for the week on my website each week (mswolansky.weebly.com). Here you are also able to find the link to the online textbook. Details on how to access and navigate it are included on the "Homework" tab. Additionally, I regularly update the “6th Grade Resources” tab with videos relevant to what we are doing in class.
